Rhythms & Stories of our Lives. 5Rhythms® & Motion Theater With Lucia Horan & Davida Taurek

Experience the freedom and transformative power of self-expression through the catalytic practices of the 5Rhythms and Motion Theater. Motion Theater, a form of improvised autobiographical storytelling grounded in a lively physicality, simultaneously functions as performance art, healing method, and spiritual practice. The 5Rhythms is a dynamic moving meditation practice that invites us to embody our psyche and awaken our soul.

Together we will dance, vocalize, share our stories, and play simple theater games that ignite the creative collective spirit. The skills and tools you will learn will inform your daily life, bringing acceptance, grace, and play wherever you need it.

This workshop will provide techniques to translate our inner life stories into art, while offering the opportunity to express ourselves freely in a safe and supportive environment.  Expect to surprise yourself and perhaps even leave with a greater sense of vitality, ease, and joy.

Heart to Heart 5Rhythms® Heartbeat & Buddhist Heart Practice

Date: November 18-23, 2018
Location: Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California

The spontaneous heart is one that knows how to love and be loved. The Heartbeat map is a guide to how our emotional energy moves and morphs. In this practice we embody the art of being a fluid emotional athlete. This map teaches us how to navigate the emotional terrain of life without getting stuck, holding on, or pushing away.

We will explore how the body has been shaped by our emotions, tracking when the heart is open and when it is closed. As feelings move us, we learn how to express emotion in a healthy and creative way. 

In this workshop we will integrate the stillness of Buddhist mindfulness meditation with the moving meditations of the 5Rhythms. The Buddha encouraged us to bring wise attention to every aspect of our lives. By incorporating the Brahmavihara (Heart Practices), one can develop the skills of living-kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity. These virtues are regarded as powerful antidotes to negative mental states.

In sitting meditation, we have the opportunity to observe the mind and body at rest through silent introspection. In the practice of the 5Rhythms, we engage in mindfulness while in motion. The 5Rhythms map teaches us how emotional energy moves. The two polarities of moving and sitting meditation together mirror the dance of life and open the door to peace, well being and balance.

5Rhythms® Dancing With the Dharma

Date: January 18-20, 2019
Location: Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California

In order to truly understand the dance, one must be still. And in order to truly understand stillness, one must dance. – Rumi

If you can liberate the body then the heart-mind can follow. In this retreat of meditation and movement, will we integrate the stillness of Buddhist mindfulness meditation with the moving meditations of the 5Rhythms®. The Buddha encouraged us to bring wise attention to every aspect of our lives. In sitting meditation, we have the opportunity to observe the mind and body at rest through silent introspection. In the practice of the 5Rhythms, we engage in mindfulness while in motion. The 5Rhythms is a map that teaches how energy moves. The two polarities of moving and sitting meditation together mirror the dance of life. In this journey we are always moving between these two spectrums. If one learns to not cling or avoid, one can then hold the place of the silent witness and be at ease with all that life offers.

We encourage meditation students to practice mindful dancing in order to bring balance and insight into their lives. We invite dancers to engage in sitting meditation in order to embody integration, balance, and insight. Join us for the groundbreaking union of these two deep and wise practices.

5Rhythms® Connections

What are the invisible threads that connect you in this life? How can we use the 5Rhythms map to help us explore the connections we most want? By fostering the intimate union of breath and movement we follow a path that leads us out of isolation and into connection. Here one learns to create the conditions for healthy connections between self, partner and community. 

At times these mysterious threads need to be tended to, cut or reinforced. The 5Rhythms practice brings us great wisdom in navigating this terrain. You will learn a system of skills and tools that can be applied to your daily life, so that you can have more ease and peace in all realtionships.

The 5Rhythms is a moving meditation practice, an improvisational form of dance. It shows us the patterns, rhythms and cycles of life. Flowing connects us to our feminine nature. Staccato connects us to our masculine. Chaos unifies and integrates these two energies. As a result we find transformation in Lyrical. From this space we are delivered into the rhythm of Stillness. The nature of the stillness dance invites compassion and allows for integration.

Grief, Loss, The Body in Motion
with Lucia Horan & Peter Selwyn

Date: April 19-21, 2019
Location: Esalen Institute, Big Sur, California

Have you experienced loss and the natural emotions of sadness, anger, fear, and love? How do you process your losses and move through your life? Unfortunately, many of us have not found safe and effective ways of expressing these emotions, and we can feel stuck, both emotionally and at times physically, with the cumulative burden of our unfinished business. Using the tools of the 5Rhythms movement practice combined with a process of grief-work that is grounded in emotional presence, non-judgment, and supportive witnessing, participants will join together in a safe space to help heal mind, body, and spirit.

Lucia will facilitate the 5Rhythms as a method to experientially access a wide spectrum of feelings. Peter, a physician with more than thirty years of experience in HIV/AIDS and palliative care, will facilitate story-sharing as part of releasing and working through losses. Other elements of the workshop include both didactic and experiential content, focusing on natural and distorted emotional responses to grief, caregiving vs. caretaking, and other topics.

July 14-20, Human Dolphin Connection Retreat

Date: July 14-20, 2019
Location: WildQuest, Bimini, Bahamas

Have you been dreaming about swimming with wild dolphins? Is this something you want to experience before you leave this planet? Join us and come eye to eye, with the amazing creatures of the crystal blue waters of Bahamas. Let us bring your dreams to reality!

During this weeklong adventure we will introduce the map of 5Rhythms®, as we explore our own innate connection to nature. Through this practice we will seek to expand the vocabulary of the body. As we share in this kinesthetic language we can deepen the connection between the human pod and dolphin pod. Through the element of the water, we seek to bring joy, healing and liberation into every cell of our being.

Each day on both land and sea we investigate the 5Rhythms®, explore the surrounding reefs, and connect with the Coastal Bottlenose and the Atlantic Spotted dolphins in their wild and natural habitat. 

This is a once in a lifetime invitation to explore the 5Rhythms®, in an incredible and mystical environment. No previous experience is necessary for this adventure. Our pod leaders will be guiding the 5Rhythms® practice, teaching free-diving and snorkeling in a safe and nurturing environment.

What we learned from our recent encounters is that our greatest power is revealed when we became receptive, authentic, and present with true intention. We honor the ‘RARE’ experience – Relax, Allow, Receive & Experience. The dolphins teach us patience, presence, and an ability to receive a unique invitation to their message of community, kindness and compassion.

5Rhythms® Moon Lodge, Honoring the Sacred Feminine
- Women’s Only Retreat

Date: July 26-28, 2019

Join us as we journey into the Moon Lodge, an exploration of tribal and ritual healing for women. How empowered do you feel as a woman navigating this world? What is your relationship to the feminine and her wisdom? 

In a time of patriarchy many do not feel the freedom to be fully empowered. The 5Rhythms is a direct path to embodiment and empowerment. By showing up in a practice of presence one can begin to clear the past and live fully in the present. 

This workshop will be about celebrating the body of Woman and the sacred feminine within. Through self-care, dance, meditation, ritual baths, and sharing circles, we will explore in the Sisterhood of our humanity. We will poultice the wounds and celebrate the great gifts of our ancestors.

Through the map of the 5Rhythms, we investigate the art of graceful transitions. How are you at beginning, following through, and ending?

This practice gives us a clear method of understanding these stages. In doing so, we learn where we are moving and where we get stuck. With this knowledge we can bring balance and ease into each stage of the creative process. From birth, through life, into death and to all endings.
